  • Santa Rosa Brewery Tour 2018

Bay Area Mashers is hosting a Santa Rosa Brewery tour! We’ll be driven up to Santa Rosa in a luxury bus, stop at 4 breweries, having pizza dinner at the 4th one. BAM will pay for the bus for BAM members and everyone will pay for their own beer and food.

    When

    Saturday March 10th, 2018

    Tickets

Seats on the bus will be reserved on a first come first serve basis. The process to reserve a seat on the bus is a bit complicated but there is a method to the madness.

I’m a BAM member and want to go

If you’re a BAM member as of January 21st 2018 and you want to go

    1. Go pre-order a seat on the bus and enter credit card payment information
    2. Make sure to show up and attend the tour
    • If you show up and attend the tour, your credit card won’t be charged and your seat on the bus is free.
    • If you do not show up and don’t go on the tour, your credit card will be charged and the money will go to pay for the bus

The reason we’re doing this is to discourage people from reserving a seat on the bus, having the club pay to get a large bus, then have people not show up and the club ends up paying for empty seats on a bus.

The reason that you need to have been a BAM member on 1/21 is to discourage people from joining BAM solely to go on the tour for cheaper.

I’m not a BAM member and want to go

If you’re not a member of BAM as of January 21st, you’re welcome to join us, just order a seat on the bus and enter credit card payment information. You’ll be charged $25. Make sure to show up and attend the tour because you’ll be charged even if you don’t show up (so that we can pay for the bus, despite your seat being empty).

If you’re a guest of a BAM member, either you can order a seat for yourself or you can ask your BAM friend to order one for you.

  • June BAM Members Meeting – Thursday June 8th

Come on out on Thursday for our monthly member meeting. Bring some homebrew to share. Aaron Wiegel will be presenting on carbohydrates in beer and the effect of mash temperature with some double blind experiments on the audience.

The meeting is at Faction Brewing in Alameda.  Social starts at 7pm and meeting starts at 7:30pm.

  • May BAM Members Meeting – Thursday May 11th

Hey BAMers! This Thursday, May 11th from 7-9pm, we will be having our May members’ meeting at Faction Brewing in Alameda. This month will feature a talk from our very own Ian Carswell on The Grainfather brewing system, which is an all-in-one all-grain brewing setup that is becoming quite popular these days. As usual, please bring a glass and some beer to share with your fellow homebrewers.

Additionally, we will also have a brief update on the Rogue IPA competition from the project leader for that, Jason Davis. A group of ~8 of us BAMers got together recently to brew and submit two versions of the same beer to Rogue, and we took first place with the Raspberry IPA version! I want to congratulate all of those that helped out with the project, and we’ll let everyone know when the final beer is brewed and put on tap at Rogue in SF. We will also be serving both IPAs (with and without the fruit addition) at Thursday’s meeting so everyone will have an opportunity to have some of our winning beer!

We hope to see you all there!

  • 2017 SOQ 2 – Hazy IPAs with Sea Salt

Hey BAMers!  Here is the information for the next Style of the Quarter competition in conjunction with Barebottle, Hazy IPAs with Sea Salt.  For those of you who weren’t at the meeting last night, Barebottle is a relatively new brewery in SF that tries to focus on local ingredients in their beers. They’ve had two previous competitions with SFHG that have yielded them great results, so now they’re opening it up to BAM and the Mad Z’s in addition to SFHG.  The competition rules are:

    • Must use Gigayeast 054 Vermont Ale.  Gigayeast is selling participants in this SOQ discounted packs of this yeast at only $4.80 each!  We set up a Tilt campaign to collect orders for these.  Please use this link: https://www.tilt.com/tilts/gigayeast-054-vermont-ale-packs-barebottle-comp.  Tilt works by collecting everyone’s orders and then charges you when the campaign ends, which in this case is 11:59PM PST on April 18th (next Tuesday).  We will then have the packs for BAMers shipped to Oak Barrel where people can pick them up.
    • Must use salt.  Lester gave good tips on this last night, but the main point is to be careful because it can be very easy to overdo it.
    • Entries are due on Thursday, June 1st at Oak Barrel in Berkeley by closing time.  We will then judge these beers the next week and the top two scoring beers will be sent to Barebottle for final judging (in addition to the normal SOQ prizes of gift certificates to Oak Barrel).
The winning beers from all 3 clubs will be brewed by Barebottle and put on tap in their tap room for public judging.  They will also send out kegs to select accounts in each club’s respective markets (e.g. Beer Rev will probably get a keg), so that we can try our club’s winning beer without having to drive into SF.  Lastly, the club beer that gets the most votes in the Barebottle tap room will be put into regular production!  Let’s win this!
  • April BAM Members Meeting – Thursday April 13th

Hi BAMers!  In addition to the info from Gene, this Thursday’s meeting will feature a talk about the next SOQ from Lester Koga from Barebottle in SF.  This SOQ style will be Hazy IPA with Sea Salt featuring local ingredients.  Lester will be bringing some Bay Area sea salt to distribute, and we will be setting up a Tilt campaign to procure reduced price pitches of Vermont yeast from Gigayeast.  The two top scoring beers from BAM from this SOQ will then go on to Barebottle, where they will decide the overall winner from BAM, at which time that beer will be brewed at Barebottle and then put on tap at select East Bay accounts!  Mad Z’s and SFHG are also participating in this manner, and all three winning beers will go on tap at Barebottle.  Patrons can then vote on these beers at Barebottle, and the Grand Prize winner will see their beer go into full production!

Lastly, this month’s meeting will be at Faction Brewing in Alameda from 7-9pm.  Please bring a glass and some beer to share.  We hope to see everyone there!
  • March BAM Members Meeting – Thursday March 9th

Hey BAMers!  This week we’re having our March members’ meeting at the usual Faction Brewing in Alameda this Thursday from 7-9pm.  This month we’re continuing our “Share Your Brew” series, and Robert Ayasse has volunteered to share some of his beer and talk about his recipes/process.  As always, please bring a glass and some beer to share.

Also, next month is our World Cup of Beer finals party!  This year, the event is being held at Faction Brewing on Saturday, April 1st.  More details can be found here: https://www.worldcupofbeer.com/.  Additionally, the deadline to submit your beers for World Cup is THIS THURSDAY AT NOON.  You can register your entries up until then, but your beers must arrive at one of the drop off locations before this time.
If anyone has any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Belgian Ale Recipe from the talk.
  • February BAM Members’ Meeting – Thursday Feb 9th

Hey BAMers!  The February member meeting is nearly upon us and will take place this Thursday, February 9th at 7pm at Faction Brewing in Alameda.  We will be featuring a talk by DOZE’s Vito Delucchi on the Turbid Mashing project that he and several others have worked on for the last year.  For those of you that are unfamiliar about this technique, turbid mashing is a traditional wort production method developed in Belgium.  More about this technique can be read at:

As always, please bring a glass and beer to share with your fellow homebrewers.  Just let us know if you have any questions.
  • 2017 SOQ1 – Select Scottish Ales and Irish Red

So the first Style of the Quarter for 2017 is for Select Scottish Ales and Irish Red Ales (BJCP 14a-c, 15a, 17c http://bjcp.org/).  Presentation slides are available on the BAM website meeting minutes for January 2017 – Bay Area Mashers Homebrew Club
These entries will be judged in the World Cup of Beer competition that our club hosts.  Entries should follow the regular WCoB entry guidelines found at https://www.worldcupofbeer.com/
To be eligible, you must have a current BAM membership and you must register your entries as related to club BAM.  Winners will be determined by overall score, possibly, but not necessarily in a head-to-head tasting by the same judges (it can get complicated).
May the malt be with you!
