  • 2021 Clone Your Favorite Beer Challenge (SOQ4)

The basic idea is to clone a beer, compare against the original, adjust and brew again. This will culminate in a Q4 style of the quarter but the clone you submit should be at least your 2nd iteration of this beer.

    RULES

    • Select a beer you love to drink, and that you are able to purchase commercially in your area.
    • Develop a recipe or find one online.
    • Make the beer.
    • Buy a 6 pack of the original and compare side-by-side! Take notes on any differences you can identify between appearance, aroma, flavor, and mouthfeel. Take side-by-side photos. Ask your friends to comment.
    • Then, adjust your recipe or process accordingly.
    • Brew the beer a 2nd time.
    • Submit as an entry into Q4 Holiday Party SOQ

You can submit this beer as an entry to the Q4 holiday party SOQ – hopefully in person! Of course, you’ll have to be able to purchase another commercial example for comparison. Whether an in-person People’s Choice or remote judging, these beers will be judged as clones: how well they compare against the commercial example. BJCP Style 34A.

  • Santa Rosa Brewery Tour 2018

Bay Area Mashers is hosting a Santa Rosa Brewery tour! We’ll be driven up to Santa Rosa in a luxury bus, stop at 4 breweries, having pizza dinner at the 4th one. BAM will pay for the bus for BAM members and everyone will pay for their own beer and food.

    When

    Saturday March 10th, 2018

    Tickets

Seats on the bus will be reserved on a first come first serve basis. The process to reserve a seat on the bus is a bit complicated but there is a method to the madness.

I’m a BAM member and want to go

If you’re a BAM member as of January 21st 2018 and you want to go

    1. Go pre-order a seat on the bus and enter credit card payment information
    2. Make sure to show up and attend the tour
    • If you show up and attend the tour, your credit card won’t be charged and your seat on the bus is free.
    • If you do not show up and don’t go on the tour, your credit card will be charged and the money will go to pay for the bus

The reason we’re doing this is to discourage people from reserving a seat on the bus, having the club pay to get a large bus, then have people not show up and the club ends up paying for empty seats on a bus.

The reason that you need to have been a BAM member on 1/21 is to discourage people from joining BAM solely to go on the tour for cheaper.

I’m not a BAM member and want to go

If you’re not a member of BAM as of January 21st, you’re welcome to join us, just order a seat on the bus and enter credit card payment information. You’ll be charged $25. Make sure to show up and attend the tour because you’ll be charged even if you don’t show up (so that we can pay for the bus, despite your seat being empty).

If you’re a guest of a BAM member, either you can order a seat for yourself or you can ask your BAM friend to order one for you.

  • June BAM Members Meeting – Thursday June 8th

Come on out on Thursday for our monthly member meeting. Bring some homebrew to share. Aaron Wiegel will be presenting on carbohydrates in beer and the effect of mash temperature with some double blind experiments on the audience.

The meeting is at Faction Brewing in Alameda.  Social starts at 7pm and meeting starts at 7:30pm.

  • May BAM Members Meeting – Thursday May 11th

Hey BAMers! This Thursday, May 11th from 7-9pm, we will be having our May members’ meeting at Faction Brewing in Alameda. This month will feature a talk from our very own Ian Carswell on The Grainfather brewing system, which is an all-in-one all-grain brewing setup that is becoming quite popular these days. As usual, please bring a glass and some beer to share with your fellow homebrewers.

Additionally, we will also have a brief update on the Rogue IPA competition from the project leader for that, Jason Davis. A group of ~8 of us BAMers got together recently to brew and submit two versions of the same beer to Rogue, and we took first place with the Raspberry IPA version! I want to congratulate all of those that helped out with the project, and we’ll let everyone know when the final beer is brewed and put on tap at Rogue in SF. We will also be serving both IPAs (with and without the fruit addition) at Thursday’s meeting so everyone will have an opportunity to have some of our winning beer!

We hope to see you all there!
